Are You A Budding Author?

Are you Canadian?

We are looking to help Canadian authors – and recent immigrants to Canada – reach their audiences.

Does your work stand out?

We aren’t interested in “cookie cutter” writing. We are looking for authors who create something new and fresh.

Have you written a book?

We accept all genres including anthologies of poetry and short stories. All we ask is that it say something important.

Is your work over 60,000 words or 100 pages?

We are looking for books we can get out teeth into.

Think you fit the bill?

Send a 10-20 page sample of your manuscript to EDITOR @ OneTallTreePress.com and if we like what we see, we’ll ask you for more!

Where are the books printed?

Until we get much larger, we are using a print on demand model utilizing the POD capabilities of large marketplaces like Ingram and Amazon.

Is this just self-publication then?

No. If you wish to self-publish, by all means go ahead. There are many wonderful ways for new authors to get their work published for sale. If you go with One Tall Tree Press, you give us the job of editing your book, designing the layout and cover, sending the book out for review, etc. We provide a unique ISBN which is not linked to Amazon.

When would my book be published?

The editing, cover design, interior layout, and advance review process can take upwards of six months to a year. Some of the major publishers take over a year from acceptance to publication. If you are in a hurry, we recommend self-publishing.

Why would I go with a small publisher like you instead of self-publishing?

That is very individual to you, but here are some:

1. The self-published market has a high supply and a low demand.

Many, many aspiring authors publish their work online, but buyers are cautious of self-published authors and prefer to trust publishers they know. Your chances of making a sale with a self-published book is lower than if you are published through a publisher, even if it just a small publisher like us.

2. You want to be a “real” published author.

Self-publishing feels sometimes like a step above vanity press. People aren’t very impressed when you say you are a self-published author, unless you have great financial success to back up the quality of your work. If you want to feel that glow of pride that comes with being published and having an editor, then you might want to seek out a publisher like us.

3. You are a career author.

If you just wrote an anthology of poetry and would like to make it into a real book, then self-publishing is probably your best route. It’s faster, you’ll make more money per sale, and it will get the job done. However, if you are a budding author hoping to catch the eye of bigger publishers someday, then it is easier to seek out an agent when you have already published with a real publisher – even if it is a small outfit like ours – than if you have self-published. Similarly, if you want your book to look professional, be well-edited, and and generally make you proud… you can do all of that work yourself, or you can entrust it to someone like us.

What are the royalties you offer?

A major publisher generally offers 10% on hardcover books and anywhere from 2-7% on paperback books. We offer our authors between 25% and 50% of profits depending on the book, how much work needs to be done, etc.
